A Senior Project in Theater and Performance Studies for Maya McGrory

A young girl takes refuge in a London Tube station during WWII and confronts grief, loss, and love with the help of her favorite book, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. A magical, emotional journey through the fantastical and the real, told through stunning music by the composing team of Spring Awakening.

I wasn’t actually meant to work on Alice by Heart in the first place, but ended up wearing several different hats by the time the production closed. Signing onto the project only two weeks before tech meant that I spent most of my days sewing, thrifting, or visiting costume closets. In between Thanksgiving festivities, I was preparing pieces for this show.

 

This was my first time working with an assistant, which was really nice in terms of having a sounding board for ideas and checking historical accuracy. Since Alice by Heart is a period piece, we did the best we could to stick to the 1940s theme while dealing with time and budget constraints.

 

By the end, I was sewing garments, crafting headpieces, styling hair, and taking photos. My hands were full, but I honestly loved the hustle and bustle of this show and getting to push my own creative skills!
