Girls Aren't Funny
Costume Design
A Senior Thesis in Theater and Performance Studies for Claire Sattler
When was the last time you saw a female class clown? Girls Aren’t Funny is an original stand-up comedy, musical comedy, and theatre fusion piece that examines what it means to be a funny woman, when you’ve been told your whole life that that’s an oxymoron.
Given that the performance dates of Girls Aren't Funny were concurrent with Much Ado, this production was unfortunately very hands-off in terms of tech week. However, I worked closely with Claire to ensure that each piece that we picked told the story that she wanted to her audience. From pieces pulled directly from her wardrobe, Victoria's Secret lingerie, and a custom letterman jacket that I painstakingly bedazzled, this was by far the most personal piece of theater that I have ever worked on. I loved being able to focus my efforts all on one actor, as well as the fact that she was playing a dramatized version of herself, someone which I know very well. This show made me very aware of how helpful understanding an actor off of the stage can be in conveying their characters as authentically and intentionally as possible.
Performed March 2-4, 2023.
