Cabaret

Assistant Costume Designer & Wardrobe Crew

Yale Dramatic Association Fall 2021 Mainstage

Set during the rise of the Third Reich, Cabaret centers on the sensually self-indulgent nightlife of the Kit Kat Klub. The Master of Ceremonies guides the audience through a night to “leave your troubles outside.” Through the eyes of Sally Bowles, a British cabaret singer, and American writer Clifford Bradshaw, Cabaret presents us with a chillingly relevant reminder of the dangers of complicity in the face of fascism.

Cabaret was my first time costume designing in college and was a large departure from the work I had done at my high school. Being a Dramat Mainstage, the production allowed us to partner with professional crew members as a learning experience. With our costume team headed by Meg Powers, of the David Geffen School of Drama, we created an imaginatively colorful look into the club scene of Berlin's Jazz Age. I assisted in the fitting and curation process, gaining an inside look at a professional costume warehouse, as well as making quick alterations and learning about the aftercare of pieces after each night's performance. Cabaret pushed me outside of my comfort zone in terms of its scale and aesthetic, ultimately catapulting me into the costume design journey that I am continuing on today.

Performed November 17-20, 2023.
